Hey guys, I was thinking of switching my pickups from my '98 Fender Jazz to some EMGs. But I don't know if they'll fit right because the pickguards have changed and now I can't fit a newer pickguard on my fender. Basically, what I'm getting to is, will it fit? And while you'replying, whats your opinion of them? I'm asking these things because they aren't very cheap and I'd rather not spend the money and get screwed. Thanks for your help, guys.

Regarding fit, EMGs are built to be standard replacements for other pickups. I don't know about why your pickguard doesn't fit, but I can tell you that with all of the aftermarket parts sales both Fender and thousands of other companies others have invested in, Fender's not going to change the dimensions of their Jazz pickup any time soon. It's an industry standard. I'd worry more about whether the tone is right for you. EMGs have a very consistent, compressed tone, kind of dry, easily effected, easily engineered. Personally, I don't find them expressive or tonally pleasing for my own tastes, but plenty of people, including Victor Wooten and Les Claypool like them. Really, your best bet is to try out a bass or two with them in them and if you like the sound then get them. Personally, before making a decision, I would also try out Bartolinis, Seymour Duncans, and some others. There are lots of nice pickup manufacturers out there doing great stuff. Lots of folks making great preamps too, and that can make a LOT of difference if you're going to take the active route.
"Getting screwed" I don't think is a relevant term in this case, because it's a matter of taste. If you walk into a candy store blindfolded and say "I'd like to get a pound of whatever is in bin number 5" having never tasted it before yourself... who is screwing who? Don't go in blindfolded, give them a taste and see what your own ears tell you.
Good luck,
O |

FWIW I just put one of these in the bridge position on my workhorse and DDDUUUUDDDDE!!!! The sickest tone I've ever heard. SUPER articulate, but it's a double-edged sword. Your techniques has to be totally on because every little buzz or inconsistent note is heard. It helps you home in on the weak parts of your playing fast, but unless you know how to correct that stuff quickly, you'll probably be really frustrated. I bought one after my friend put one in a bass he built. Awesome, but unforgiving. |
