I've had my '08' MIA Jazz now for a month now and have decided, after giving it some careful thought, to install Original Series Bartolini 57J1's in place of the American Standard pups that came with the bass, and here's why -
I am a guy who usually leaves his sticks alone - no upgrades and don't get me wrong, the bass sounds great, but I'm not too keen about the bridge pup at all. Compared to the Bart bridge pup in the Squier, the bridge pup in the MIA Jazz is very anemic - it doesn't have the output that I've come to expect. The 57J1's have the deepest tone of the Original Series Barts, but at the same time will preserve the Jazz tone that I so much like. Here's what Bartolini says about them - They have bright Neck tone and deep Bridge tone. These pickups are wound to yield much more "growl" from the Bridge pickup. Tonally, these have stronger lows and low mids than the typical "vintage" tone. I guess I could have just put a bridge pup in, but decided to go for both, instead.
I will admit I'm a little nervous about doing this, it's the first time I've ever really done any type of upgrade to a bass of this kind. My buddy's got a '97' MIA Jazz that he installed the 4 string version of the Barts in and it sounds pretty awesome, so I said, "Why not." If they don't work out I'll just put the stock pups back in and evil bay or Craigslist the Barts. Anyway, a tone report will definitely be coming up. |
