They tend to be fairly ok quality... not spectacular or anything, but ok. Not bad for learning on. There's a lot of variation in Squier, they can be anywhere from utter garbage to something that you could use for years quite happily. You'll have to play around a little.

I plan on buying a Squire bass - the Black * Chrome. My secret is "them changes".
1. Add a brass nut for more harmonic sustain.
2. Replace the bridge with a Badass II or the new Vintage heavier bridge Fender recently came up with.
3. Maybe add some Quarter Pounder P/J pickups.
4. Perhaps a series/parallel wiring scheme to the pickups for more tonal variation.

If the bass is ok, kinda solid based from the beginning, then I am only improving on it. A/9 . . . baby.

go for it man, i have two Squire basses, the 70's style Vintage Modified Jazz and the Deluxe Jazz Active V, which is a five stringer, the Squires are very good quality for little money.

I bought my Squier FVM Fretless just to meddle aroung with and play 2-3 songs with my band. Turns out, I've scored a totally gigable bass and I'm enjoying it alot; I invested wisely. Smile
