Hey guys, I am thinking about purchasing the new Danelectro. The Danelectro Dano '63 Reissue Longscale Bass...does anyone have any helpful comments about Danos?
Heres a link to the bass, it has a sound file on it so you can here what the bass sounds like fingered, picked, and slapped on all the pickups.

| I got 2 Danelectro guitars (not basses) ad they have good tone, sustain and he best feature i liked is that they were very affordable and had 4 effects built in. I love them because this is like having a guitar plus 4 effect pedals. |

I own a '63 short scale, and I tested it side by side with the long scale. They're both pretty nice for the money. They're light weight, have a unique tone, and the neck is pretty nice (the feel is comparable to my Jag-bass, which has a satin neck feel and costs twice as much). Also, if you're a finger player who likes to plant their thumb somewhere (like me), both the neck and the pickguard make good thumb rests (the pickguard can be a little weird though, what with the curving and all). I'd say, if you like it, get one, but you may want to try both side by side (like I did).
Here's my impression if you can't:
Tone: They both have a pretty twangy tone, but the long scale is (in my opinion) almost too twangy for a bass. The short scale has less emphasis on the overtones.
Playability:Largely based on preference, the short scale is obviously faster and bends easier. For those bassists who like to go high on the neck, you're gonna want to look at the long scale, as it has 24 frets, though up there, people will think you're playing a guitar. They were obviously not designed to slap, as the thick pickguard makes it difficult, but I actually don't have much trouble slapping the short scale (not that I really slap much).
Balance: On a strap, the short scale balances almost perfectly; without my hand on the neck, it seems like it wants to neck dive a bit, but friction keeps it in place. I didn't get a chance to play the long scale on the strap, but it seems like it might have a tendency to dive (also, consider the fact that the tuning heads are for a guitar). Sitting, the long scale seemed to neck dive a bit, while the short scale doesn't unless I put it on my right knee (When sitting, I play with the guitar on my left knee, so it may just be a byproduct of that). This is of course assuming that you're in a playing position.
So there you go. About the only grievances I can make about it is that it has guitar tuning heads, and that the design of the saddles require that you destring it to adjust intonation. Now excuse me while I finally check to see whether I'm going to need to adjust the intonation. |
