I'd played piano for five years and saxophone for eight, gave that all up after high school. Played guitar and a little bass during high school and picked up the bass guitar exclusively earlier this year. I'm 20 now and relatively new to just playing bass, but I had plenty of music experience getting on with it and I already knew how to move my fingers the right way, so practicing an hour and a half everyday for the past eight months I think I've done pretty well for myself. Actually, I'm going with my roommate, friend and guitar player tonight to meet up with a drummer who wants to start a band with us. Here's hoping it works out.

Anyway, my gear - 2008 NAMS Fender Precision Bass. Black/black/maple. Currently outfitted with a BadAss III bridge while the HMV bridge is out for repairs, after which I will have a BAIII for sale. Long story. Well, not really long, but embarassing. Got a steal on an Ashdown ABM EVO II combo amp at the start of the summer, 575 watts into four 10" speakers and a tweeter. I'm in love with the thing. No pedals/effects of any kind, just dime the knobs on the bass, full up on the input and the treble on the Ashdown and crank the tube drive stage. Sometimes I play with a pick, sometimes I don't.

Good choice on gear although I'm a Jazz bass guy myself.

Some of my favorite bass players are Jazz Bass guys, Geddy Lee and Tim Commerford being two of them, and I love the sound of a J Bass. Unfortunately, I'm really not a big guy, and J Basses look and feel absolutely huge on me. It feels awkward just sitting down with one, let alone standing up with one. The P Bass isn't as bad, and I actually prefer the thicker neck. And the sound, well, it goes without saying.

Nice stuff. Definitely have a nicer amp than I do, after about 13 years of playing :P

I was never a big Rush fan until a couple years ago... not sure why I turned on to them really, they're fairly outside of the scope of the rest of what I listen(ed) to. Geddy has killer tone, but a lot of that was played on a Rickenbacker 4001 with a Rick-O-Sound stereo output, giving that nice low end growl and articulate treble. He plays the Jazz a lot these days, but most of the classic stuff is Rickenbacker.

Mobility is certainly not Ashdown's priority when it comes to their gear. Actually, I don't think they put casters on anything they produce. Sounds great, but it's about 125 pounds. I had to buy a handcart to move it around and carry it upstairs because the side handles are useless.

Thats a big rig there. I have 2 cabs I need to move around and they both weigh 100+ lbs. Luckily, one of them has wheels, but I keep them in my room on the second floor. Haha
