hi, i need help deciding which rickenbacker bass to buy, i have never played one before, but want one. i have seen an 81, a 93 for sale or should i go for a new one? any help would be much appreciated. also any thing else you think i should know while i decide, i am spending most of my student loan of this and want to make sure i get the best i can.

I'll agree with Louie and you've probably made a decision since your post. I voted for new, if you were definitely gonna buy one.

i like rickenbacker for its tone but its range is very limited because of its basic 19-21 frets are hard to reach beacuse of the body if they made a rickenbacker with 24 frets i would buy one but until then i dont have the money and don't have the will to try to get one

If you like the classic Ric stuff, such as Paul McCartny, Roger Waters (back when Syd was still with the Floyd), and others of that era, go with the new.

Starting in 2007, Ric put the capacitor back on the treble pickup on a switch (so the capacitor can be turned on or off). That capacitor filters out all the bass tones on the pickup, which was part of the signature sound of the 4001s. So in essence, a modern 4003 is the equivalent to an 80's or 90's 4003 and a late model 4001 .
