Everyone knows Larry Graham slaps on a Jazz bass. Personally P bass are excellent for funk playing. J bass has a solid bottom for jazz playing. I would get 1 of each.

The P-bass has that great thumping sound that is very solid. Roll off the tone control a little and you get a real smooth punch.
The The Jazz is more versatile than the Precision. It has a much darker, punchier sound. Roll off of the tone control a little and you get a real motown, soulful timbre.
They are both excellent basses. You can't go wrong with the sound of either bass, IMO they can't sound bad. |

Jamerson played a P-bass with flats.
If I still played 4-string, this is the axe I'd get because it has the best of both P and J bass worlds, plus a ton more. This was Leo's finest work, hands down. WITH the old school paddle head, talk about total mojo axe.
