Can some one tell me what a S-1 switch is? Do I have or need one in bass playing?

The S-1 switch is very simple it is a switch that changes the circuitry of you instrument from series to parallel wiring and vice versa, it can give you a beefier tone. It is not neccessary to have and a lot of people hate the S-1 switch because of the way it was implemented on the Fenders, the push button knob which was quirky and would break, most people prefer the push pull pot method of implementation.
I hope that I answered your questions.

Thanks to ya Rd_Artist. I had a switch like this on my stolen Precision Fretless with Jazz pickups installed. It gave me a muted tone when the Pbass & Jbass pickups are in series. Also my inquiring mind installed a phase reversal switch on the Pbass pickup.

The tones I could get out of that thing.

Wasn't it fitted to the last batch of the America Series fenders, I understand the 2008 models have had it removed. I tried a Jazz with it a few weeks ago, seemed kinda interesting, but I can't afford 840 notes for a fender right now Sad

Phase shifting on a fretless must have produced some wicked tones.
