Sounds like a recipe for a broken neck to me, surely it would be easier to bend the string to get a variation in note? _________________ Visit http://www.planetrock.co.uk/default.asp You KNOW you want to! |

Jaco does that technique. I' m scared to do that to my basses though. Don' t wanna break them. |

Go easy Duder! This is an old technique and it's a little hard on the neck - so easy does it.
The opposite trick is to hold your headstock with one hand and [EASY!!] dig your other elbow firmly into the body and GENTLY pull the headstock back. This will raise the note.
Some basses are better for this than others. I wouldn't recommend doing this with basses with thin necks, like old Ric 4001 or Gibson.
But Fenders and stouter basses seem to do fine. Really, it doesn't take much pressure to make the effect.
With some basses it may knock your instrument out of tune, which is kind of a distraction if your playing live. Gives your tech something to do though.
Oh -- did I mention Be Careful. _________________ Life is just a game and there's many ways to play and all you do is choose |

Yup, certainly not unheard of, and I've seen many guitar players doing it as well. It's hard on the guitar, and can accelerate the development of warps and cracks. If you do it, do it sparingly, unless you're ready for the repercussions.

Yup, and the double truss rod system in Rics would be pretty unhappy with that sort of treatment :P
Fenders aren't too bad, and if you screw things up, replacement necks are easy enough to come by. |
