If you play classic 70's British punk rock (like Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks etc) stay on the root as much and as fast as you can.
If you play The Clash style use simple reggae riffs.
If you are into 80's - 90's punk (Exploited,GBH) play some REALLY FAST eighth notes.
And if you play hardcore (like Black Flag) use as many distortion as you can, no matter what you play.
Don't forget to smash your bass at the end of the concert. |

In (very) simple words, in order to build reggae riffs you must use lots of up beat syncopated sixteenth notes and rests.
That means that if you start counting, one and two and three and four and ... you should play most of your notes on the and's (unlike the drummer who should play on one,two etc.) and use some rests on the one,two...
This is a very simple reggae bass line:

In a Clash style song you should keep this feeling but don't use so many notes otherwise it will end up a funk song. |

it differs with the band. The only thing that I've seen Punk Rock bassists share is the fact that it's ALWAYS chord roots.
As long as you stick to the chord roots you will have a fine punk rock bassline. Your rhythms can be a harmony part. |

| Work on playing "on the Beat" or a little in front of the beat to drive the song. U2's Adam Clayton plays with a lot of classic punk style. Playing in the pocket. Simple lines with drive and very steady playing on top of the beat to push the music forward. Mike Dirnt strikes me as a pretty schooled bassplayer. I like what he does in the context of GD music using major scale fills. I'm a fan of the Dookie era. If you are looking for a Dirnt feel, learn your scales and modes. |

Def don't forget popping and slapping cause you can make some pretty tight punk bass lines doing that. _________________ Cold seems crippling lame meander through corridors aroma's thick
