I was wondering what are the steps to change the finish of my bass, currently its black with a white pickguard and as I got bored I thought maybe I could try something on it. . I was hoping for a natural finish but I think the pickguard could be a problem...

The main problem you might have with a natural finish is the type of wood the bass is made of. If it's a wood with an uninteresting or ugly grain, a natural finish won't be very nice... and if it's a laminate, it would be a bad idea to go natural.
