|
|
sorry if this is a frequently asked question, i havent been on here in aaaaages.
what id really like for you to tell me is a good set of strings for use on a Epiphone Thunderbird 4 string bass.
i play metal style music and like a fairly bright tone, so not flatwound (am i right?) but i also like to slap and pop quite a bit and am practicing tapping too.
any help would be much appriciated and thanks in advance! _________________ In the space between a blink and a tear...Death Blooms |

I just put DR Lo-Riders (Nickel) on both my basses. 45 65 85 105 on my Fernandes (passive). And 45 65 85 105 125 on my 5-string Charvel (active electronics, passive pickups). The strings have a defined low end but at the same time are fairly bright. They are brighter on the passive bass than the active, on the active they have a more rounded and fairly warm sound which I like. The strings are too bright for my taste on the passive bass and I hope they mellow out. They sound metallic. I guess I like that bluesy old string sound, but I wanted to try these strings. They should be good for slapping, if I only could slap. I blame my basses for not being very good slap basses. The harmonics sound great, however. I would suggest Lo-Riders for you because they are used in heavy style music plus people say they are good for slapping. _________________ I've recently done tons of reflecting on my life and have come to the realization that my life is awesome |

| Now the strings have been on my Fernandes (passive) for five hours and the initial metallic sound is gone. Instead I have a warm and punchy sound that sounds a bit muffled or compressed. It is hard to find the right words. They sound better now. |

cheers louie! ill check them out. have you had any experience (or second hand info) of "pyramid blue rock" strings (or something like that)? i ask as i had a look around and someone said they give the sort of tone i was after but that was only one guy and id like more to back him up/argue against.
i may sound like an idiot for asking this but i want knowledge! is the metal used on the string significant? ie nickel, steel, whatever. i may be looking too hard for strings but id like to get them right
must dash! thanks again to louie and thanks in advance to anyone that may reply. _________________ In the space between a blink and a tear...Death Blooms |

Sorry I don't know anything about pyramid strings...
Some strings are stainless steel and some are nickel (with a stainless steel core). Nickel is also magnetic and the idea to use it in strings is newer and in like the 70s all strings were stainless steel. Nickel is a softer metal so it is easier on your fingers and frets, but it does not sound as 'bright'. _________________ I've recently done tons of reflecting on my life and have come to the realization that my life is awesome |

| Rotosounds. Steve Harris uses them, and with an exception of Cliff Burton, Steve Harris is the epitome of a metal bassist. |

Go with Roto Sound SH77 flat wound strings. They dump your tone into the basement and make you nads jiggle!
Steve Harris's personal choice. Play them and have them on my Fender P-bass and they absolutely rock. _________________ Canadian in the Midwest, meeting new people, jammin with my band. Love your own music because someone has to! |
