Just got my first bass (ibanez SR885). I play guitar and wanted to try this. I was tuning the bass when the E string broke between the nut and the tuner. The bass was shipped with the strings extremely loose. I was using the electronic tuner on my Digitech RP200A. I was trying to tune the bass down a whole step to avoid string breakage. The rest of the strings tuned fine though the B strings feels a bit tight (tuned to A) though I don't know what's too tight. Anything I should know before trying to tune this thing again? Should I use something else as a tuner? I think the strings were pretty old.

the strings probably had lost their elasticity, being so old, when putting on a new set make sure you stretch the strings as you tighten, and make sure that if you have a long scale bass, use long scale strings.
And Happy thumping Smile

Thanks. I got the new E string on no problem. This bass is a blast!

I would say that you just got a dodgy string job. Selling over distance means you got no come back, and they can pretty much do a slack job without you storming in demanding a refund.

Strange string to snap... An E string should tow a small car before breaking!
