It's sort of a drum beat but with the bass. It is the same thing as dead notes.

they enhance the feel of a bass line. they're used in place of rests making yer pattern/part sound fuller and more flowing. also helps you play off beat and accented notes without losing the rhythm or groove. gives yer bass part a little boost without busying it up with a bunch of actual notes. good in place of grace notes to. super easy to learn.

I have never heard of 'ghost notes', but from what I am reading, are they similar (or exactly the same as) muted notes, where the left hand just rests on the strings, or the right palm deadens the vibrations?
If they are, then I love using them in slap. Makes it sound like you're Victor Wooten himself (until you hear Victor again!)

Indeed they are my fine fresh four stringin' compadre! Muted notes, ghost notes, dead notes are all de same. Essential for slappin'! Been 'round long before Sir Vic!

However... Sir Vic is the Doctor!
No matter how good I think I'm getting... I never get near him!

I read somewhere that the term "Ghost Notes" used to have a different definition. James Jamerson apparently considered Ghost Notes as passing open string tones that weren't diatonic to the chord progression or structure of the song, and created some well peaced tense dissonace. But the meaning over time has changed. I love poinless trivia...
