Percy Jones - 1 of 2 of the most innovative players i've heard. He stands head and shoulders above all the rest. And he doesnt even slap, like all the clones do, and they just seem to be variations of themselves.
Jones avoids this " generic " style of playing entirely. Heard one slap bass line ? - heard them all. When Brand X first slid onto the music scene, i was blown out of the water

| Victor Wooten, my band director just introduced me to his music and i was ready for more but one of the reasons i started playing bass was because i thought slap was sweet |

Some of my favorite bassists are:
.: Andy Rourke (The Smiths) - I think he put together some phenomenal basslines; nothing terribly complex, but maintaining a great, interesting rhythm with some nice chording as well. Nice thick tone too.
.: Chris Murphy (Sloan) - A lot of my own style is (ununtentionally) modelled after his style. Again, nothing terribly complex, but good rhythms and progressions that don't neccessarily follow what the guitars are doing. Driving rhythms that (to me) really define the songs.
.: Mike O'Neill (the Inbreds, Mike O'Neill) - After Les Claypool, Mike brought the idea of bass as more than root notes to me. The Inbreds was a bass guitar and drum duo, so the bass work had to fill out the songs; I've taken a certain amount of the stylistic elements he used to my own playing.
.: Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) - Yup, I'm a kid of the 90s. Sonically, Krist is what drove Nirvana along; driving basslines that kept the songs going. Basic basslines with simple ornamentation, but that's all the songs needed really. |

yes ..correct, my fellow Midlandic friend. And for your very delight, i have posted a couple of doctored ( shortened to save download time )
tracks of the very delicious and weird mr Percy Jones.
I would advise, nay...insist ! that you stuff your headphones on and crank up ze volume a tad, as monsuier Jones bass parts are sometimes
very low in the mix, although you will definately hear his weird playing
above the mix at times. Its just that i wouldnt want you to miss the low mix bass lines. There isnt a bass player like him anywheres

That is some very inpressive stuff there my dear boy, thankee for the links. Deffo not your average bass playing. Reminds me of a Jazzy Chris Squire (my personal Hero) in that he is playing totally against the expected groove, and making is sound sooo cool!
Most certainly some sounds to aspire to. Do you play in that style yourelf? or just wish...as I do _________________ Visit http://www.planetrock.co.uk/default.asp You KNOW you want to! |

Oh i wish sir !
I can play nothing like Jones. Our only similarity is that we both play the same instrument, and both finger style. Thats about it sadly.
But i keep trying... i've kinda developed my own style, but influenced heavily by Jones and Karn _________________ Strung out on strings |

Holy crap I was just about to say that.
Cliff Burton
Les Claypool
Klaus Flouride
I respect Cliff for insane compositional ability and the fact that he was a wah magician, and he made my favorite band of all-time sound so awesome. Les on the other hand is just a madman who can play anything. He's like Billy Sheehan on acid. And Klaus, well, other than his recent selling-out by allowing a child star to sing for the Dead Kennedys, he's easilly the most talented punk rock bassist I've ever heard. He hardly ever does any challenging lines but he writes them so well, they always fit in with the music. Along with that, songs like California Uber Alles and Saturday Night Holocaust are some of my favorite songs on bass to ever play. |

-Paul McCartaney.....his lines are like singing, he's amazing
-Steve Harris....the metal bass player god, he kept maiden driving
-Geezer Butler.....his lines fit PERFECTLY with song, nuff said
-Cliff Burton...cause he brought metal bass playing along with harris to the forefront more, and he knew his stuff, and i think his technique is impressive....although i think if he didn't die young, he wouldn't have been such a big deal honsetly _________________ It's like a jungle out there |

And the grooviest bass line of PM's ( my personal opinion ) is Paperback Writer.
Again i say, nay thrice i say, get under ze headphones, crank up the volume and take note of the " singing " perfection and timing of PM's bass work. Its a joy to behold. Its almost modern by the 60's standard of the day. _________________ Strung out on strings |
