My wife bought this for me on the weekend. 3-Tone Sunburst
Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass
I just have to change the strings to flatwounds for the strings that came with is scratching the Ebonol fingerboard. |

I love this bass! I finally have the growling sound I was looking for.
One thing I love about this bass is the tone knob. I get different sounds with it. |

| At $280, I've been considering this little beast myself. Keep playing it and give us an update on if you still think it's worth while once the "new acquisition" phase has ended. :) |

Well..I' ve been playing this bass for a week only but I can say that it' s my favourite bass so far. The only thing I don' t like about this bass is that I had to change the strings to flats so it wouldn' t scratch the fretboards. Other than that, I found the growl I was looking for.
I was going to buy the black Mexican Fender Standard Fretless Jazz Bass but I really think that my Squire is better. I didn' t like how the Fender feels. It wasn' t sliding enough for me. Plus the pickups sounded weak.
To rate this bass, I' d say...
Feel: 5 out of 5
Sound: 4 out 5
Looks: 4 out of 5 |

I'm suprised the pickups on the MIM sounded weaker than the Squire....just goes to prove you've GOT to play em all before you buy. Good choice dude, glad you're happy with it! _________________ Visit http://www.planetrock.co.uk/default.asp You KNOW you want to! |

| Well, that is true, but in this specific case, the pickups in the Squire are Seymour Duncans, rather than their standard fare. |

Are you still getting the growl with the flatwound strings? Others might be able to correct me if I am wrong but I don't think that rounds will hurt the ebanol board, it seems very solid almost indestructable. _________________ "I'm not a man who likes to swear, but I never cared for the sound of being alone." |

I think the growl diminished a bit but I' m still satisfied with the sound.
My fretboards has scratches already from playing with the rounds that' s why I changed it. I' m afraid that it might get worse if I didn' t change my strings to flats.
But you' re right, it sounds better with rounds. Just wanted to save my fretboards. |

One of the ones I tested in store already had some board wear from the rounds. While it's tougher than wood, it's not indestructible. |

Maybe you could try some half rounds on it next time you decide to change strings. A lot of companies make 'em.
They are rounds that have been ground flat on the outside, so smooth on the fretboard.
I use D'addario halfies on my fretless Ripper - ebony board.
Hope you're enjoying the fretless! _________________ Life is just a game and there's many ways to play and all you do is choose |

Yes, I' m enjoying it very much. I heard of the half rounds. Maybe next time I' ll try it.
I have a question though. What are tapewounds for and how do they sound like? |

Tape wounds... I think are a wrapped string; usually its a nylon wrap. That or it's similar to a flat wound; the core is wrapped with a flat metal tape... I can't remember which definition fits the product :P
Either way, it's a more mellow, less bright tone. If it's the nylon wrapped variety, they're somewhat smooth and deep... a little closer to a double bass sort of tone than the standard flat wounds. |
