Hi all. I've been playing bass for only about 2 years now and have recently played through nothing more than a 1x12 and smaller and just bought an awesome amp for a great deal: the SVT410HLF and SVT3Pro head.
Now - I've never used Ampeg and am used to playing with a very clean sound. However, when playing in the high range through this amp/cab I get a lot of crunchiness which to me sounds like distortion. It's very buzzy and about 20 minutes of messing with the EQ etc. didn't produce a much cleaner sound.
Now before I go into a detailed description of the sound I was hearing, I have to ask - how crunchy/growly IS this amp? Am I just such a newbie that I didn't know amp were supposed to sound distorted in the high range, haha, or might I be hearing something that ain't right. (My guess is the tweeter is blown...).
Thanks!

| Hey Sara, how do you have your amp set up. I think that your gain control might be set too far counter clockwise. I found that with my SVT3 Pro that if you set it all the way to the right that it is cleaner. |

| Thanks Pete - I'll try that. I do notice the fuzz go away when the HF attenuator on the back of the cab is at 0 (infinity) ... but I had another engineer and guitar player listen to it and suggest that it could be tube distortion or harmonic distortion. I'm yet to do some troubleshooting by swapping heads and cabs and see what happens, but in the meantime I will give your suggestion a shot and post what I find out. |
