4 Strings are standard. I suggest that anyone start out on a 4 and if they feel like experimenting with the extra flexibility of more strings later, go for it.

I think Dean makes an alright product, but I'm not THAT familiar with the company.
The question is whether it feels good in your hands and whether it will provide a sound you want, which can only be determined by playing with it.

well bass is WAAAY different from guitar and the general rule for bass guitars is that more strings mean more range but its hard to play while less strings easier to play but less range a beginer should get a 4string and if you fell embarssed or something equally stupid about playing a 4string think about this many bass players are famous that play 4 strings so i recomend a 4 string unless you are a excellent abillity to bass and decide to get 5 string

Personally, I would recommend starting with a 5. Sure loads of folks use 4, but this is today. Lots of music of all styles require 5 or more, and besides you get ALL of the tones of a 4 plus more. What would you be losing out on by starting on a 5? Nothing. It puts you ahead of the game.

I dunno; I'm a former 5-stringer who's gone back to playing 4 after about a decade of playing 5. Fives don't give you that much extra playing room that you can't get with a 4, and there aren't very many styles that require more than 4 strings. Learning to play on a 4 and achieving the lines that you can easily achieve with a 5 will only make you a better player, which, ultimately puts you leagues ahead of the game.
