Trying to decide what would be best for me P-Bass or Stingra

trying to decide between an American P-Bass and a Stingray. I play mostly rock/alternative rock. A litte slapping and popping here and there. I have heard people say that Stingrays are only good for slapping and popping, and can't get a nice round sound. I like the feel and look of the stingray, and the Precision bass has a nice fast neck on it. I'm at a loss. What would you guys do. I'm looking for mostly a nice smooth sound kind of like the bass on Chilli Peppers song Walkabout from "One Hot Minute". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
