First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong part of the forum, but I wasn't sure if my question pertained to bass guitar technique specifically, so I'll post it here.
Anyway, my question:
How can I get this sound (pickups, tone woods, amp settings, anything) ?

I'm talking about that "nasal", tuba-like sound that's so common in jazz. I previously thought that someone needed a fretless to get that sound, but this fellow doesn't appear to be playing a fretless. |

Tone like this has a lot to do with the "attack" of the fingers of the player as well as the type of pickups, string gauge, hand position, amp, speakers, etc------ the same thing you will be told almost every where.
A good bet for you is to get to a Jazz player forum and ask a zillion questions !!
Good luck. _________________ "THE REAL GREASE IS DOWN IN THE BASS GROOVE ! ! HAVE MERCY " |

| high action, low pickups, flatwound strings, pluck the string upward etc. Experiment...it won't hurt you. |

Man, before you start getting a lot of advice from a lot of different folks, make the effort to speak to a player that really gets the tone you want.
Understand that each player has his or her "own" sound and style. What works for one player, does not for another. I have a friend who gets the exact tone you are after with a 72 Telecaster Bass and heavy gauge round wound strings. That would not work for most all others, and certainly not work for most of the "newer" style players you will meet here.
Good luck on your tone qwest !!!!
