I have a 'Legend' vintage series bass, I have no idea what this brand is or if its any good, I just want to learn. I want to buy a new bass because I think this Legend one is really bad (fret noise etc). Im looking at a ASHTON BASS, is this a good brand? This bass only has the pickups closer to the neck not by the bridge, what does this mean??? is this bad? - Clueless

if you have the cash, buy a jazzman. Go to your local rock shop (if in aucks) and get them to help you sell that one and choose another one, In welly go to mainline music in Newtown. im not sure about anywhere else. Ashtons are good. I have an ashton. ANy bass is good if you like the sound of it or you feel you play it well.

years ago I had a fender p bass (mid 70's sunburst alder body, maple board, wish i still had it) . you know it's a good bass. I played in a country band and had the tone all the way to the treble side and ran the amp bassy. we played a gig with a sound man. He took his signal off a direct box before the amp. he complained about my fret noise. I had the bass refretted a few weeks later. bottom line the problem wasn't with my bass. it was with me. play your bass unelectrified. learn how to not make fret noise that way. then play it through you amp as trebly as you can and learn again. Then crank up the volume and do it again. In the process you will discover how to control your tone with your fingers. wax on wax off
better bottom to you as well

before you do anything go to the best "guitar" store you can find and have your bass set up. Here in the states there are a lot of musical instrument shops that sell pianos, trumpets saxes, etc. Guitar stores sell guitars, (electric) basses, drums and stuff for that side of music. Your problem may simply be a bad set up. a set up costs about $50 usd here. cheaper than any bass worth buying

Ashton seems to have a pretty decent reputation for making good basses.
They're just not that familiar to us here in the USA because they're an Australian manufacturer that has very limited distribution in the USA right now.
Here's a wee bit of info on Ashton's basses etc that I found doing ye ole search so everyone can see what they look like, and a couple of reviews.

now here's what i say. first, screw the fingers, play with a pick, the only benefit to fingerplaying is slap. secondly, left hand, move fingers and spread and SPREAD AND SPREEADDD until your hand feels like putty. then, work on getting all of the first four frets from your hand without having to reposition. my words of wisdom right there, also be quick about things, if your quick, you can forget mistakes ever happen if you do make any

mkuk, u have no idea. i use a pick for definition and speed for my fat fingers, which happen to muffle everything when you're looking at passive electronics. a nice little heavy fender pick, heavy guage strings, and your playing drop d like it's dead e. fingers are used more for music like funk where the bass has to be dubby or soft songs, but they still just don't give any definition in my case

Scorpion you tool. Fingers rule- you can emulate pick sounds with fingers but not vice-versa. Picks R 4 those who's fingers aren't fast or hard e nuff...lol!

Nothing against them really, good for punk - play with one from time 2 time.
