| ever since i started playing, i've listened to almost nothing but bass players. one thing i noticed, is they all have this nice, full, throaty sound. a fellow bass player told me it was just skin oil collecting on the strings. is that it it? is it an eq, bass material thing? dying to know. tired of sounding thin and tinny. |

I wish it were as simple as skin oils collecting on the strings. Great bass tone is a combination of the players skill, a good bass, as well as what type of bass, and good amp, and possibly the use of various effects and stuff. There is no single answer to "how do I get great tone".
Start by simply playing the best you can and practicing a lot. Try a lot of guitars and amps. Go see other players play live. Eventually you'll pull it all together if you remain interested for long enough.
I say a "good" bass and a "good" amp above. That's all relative as they say. But in general, you get what you pay for, so go for the best you can afford. |

Your amp may sound thin up close, and throaty from 35 feet away. Low frequency waves need distance to be fully produced. Supermau as usual covered it well. Skin oil is maybe 1% of the entire subject.

| 6 months or so ago Warren Haynes (guitarist for allman brothers, Phil Lesh and Govt Mules) was on a local radio show. Someone called in and asked what was most important part of a good sound. His answer was fingers. |

Started with a Japanes Jazz Bass, traded against a Streamer Stage One and believe me the difference is phenomenal. Anyone would sound good on this bass. But I think it's half and half, skill and kit. Your kit doesn't need to be expensive, but you've gotta pay attention to the detail in your sound. Get to know your kit so you can get the most from it.
But carry on with what you've got. Until you get to change things, tinny can sound great. _________________ Slap me silly! |
