Ok, in my current band the guitarist wants to play in B, I've got a 5-string but was actually planning on selling since I like my Dean 4-string so much more. I dont want to tune down to B on my 4 because then I dont have enough string tension. What should I do? I thought about using the low strings from a 5-string set but dont know how that would sound or feel.

Well, you could use the 5 string, or, keep playing the Dean and play an octave up for the B, C, and D (+b/#s) or play harmony notes instead of the roots without retuning.
You may run into more issues than you want using the heavy gauge strings from the 5 on the 4, as it may require setup changes with the truss rod, saddle position and may need to file the nut for the heavier gauge strings. These alterations MAY also change the feel of the Dean, making it a moot point in the end anyway. If I was to try this, I'd do it on something cheap that I didn't love first :P |
