Hey people, am going over some theory at the mo. Unfortunately im not in a position to jam/play with other musicians and wont be for a while. Im looking at.... and practicing chord progressions in songs. At the moment i cant do this because when im playing a song i have no idea what chords they are playing, so in turn cant experiment with my own combination of notes, or analize the chords in the song!
Might it be a good idea to buy some sheet music for a certain band with chord symbols at the top, so i can analize these chord progressions and learn from them???

Really need some advice on this one as i feel as if im holding myself back by not jamming with others(ie, chordal instruments)!! Might getting hold of sheet music help me here?

Any help much appriciated.

Yes that is an excellent way to learn.

Personally my experience is alot different than other people because I already knew how to read bass clef notes (and C instrument bass clef at that Cool ) way before I picked up bass. When I decided bass was right for me, I bought a music book and then suddenly realized that frets worked like half steps which helped me immensely. I didn't even have to learn a fret or note, just that basic idea was enough for me to learn.

I played tabs before I got my music book, but ever since then I've used sheet music. The advantages to tabs are they are easier to read the notes with, but reading rhythms is hard with tabs and is a disadvantage. An advantage to sheet music is that rhythms are clean, but the disadvantage is that it takes some learning.

If you're just going to play songs that you know the rhythms by heart and just need the notes, go with tabs. If you are looking for a higher quality learning method, go with sheet music.
