I have heard on many occasions of someone having an old bass, buying a new one, and taking the frets out of the old one in intention to not have to get a third bass. Is this possible, and if so, how does a person go about doing this and do you finish the fretboard again in any different way?

The thing with a fretless is the neck relief. The " Mwaaaahh " sound that everyone loves on a fretless is in fact due partly to minimal neck relief...the strings actually striking the fretboard slightly, and low action.

Ebony or similar fretboards also help things.

Removing frets is always possible...but get an expert to do it.
