Franco Prestia and Victor Wooten probably have the most interesting styles I have seen. Both very different to each other, the sounds that these guys produce is awesome!

Check them out if you're keen to see fingerstyles of both left and right hand variation.

agreed that victor wooten is up there, umm, maybe check out some billy sheehan stuff??? he is amazing, i would class jaco as a lead bass player, he had a way of really cutting through the mix and putting him self smack bang in the middle of the spotlight

im not sure how you guys feel about him, but i think that les claypool has an interesting way of mixing the regular style of bass with lead. im in love with the fretless though, you know how it is...

Another vote from Sheehan right here. If you can get hold of the tab book The Talas Years there's tons of great lead bass stuff in there. You'd learn a lot by listening to him play with Mr Big and Niacin too.

Don't forget Cliff Burton and John Entwistle either!

Cheers
Stu

Well we all know and play bottoms and grooves---but lead really expands your bass. Love Wooten, Manring--all the really greats. I play soloist occasionally so had to get into lead play--entire melodies as a bass song (opposed to bass lines). Since I am new here and cannot post my soundclick page link until I have 10 posts, I'd be glad to send it via email to anyone interested in my humble take of lead bass playing. Best regards.

Heres a "lead bass" thing I wrote. Maybe not to the taste of all, but I have fun playing it. This is my Soundclick page and the 1st song there is "lead bass" called Looking Past the Edge. The other "Strings Cry" is "lead melody" on a bass.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=778644&content=music

Hope this helps understanding how far you can go in this type of playing. <shrug>
