i'm looking for some tips on what to look for and what to avoid.
i just got my first job and i'm looking to save as much money as possible of caurse, but at the same time get something that will be good enough for band rehearsal when i form or join a garage band. so i won't be getting one of those little practice amps, or some second hand bass that's kind of broken. i'm the kind of person that strictly buys new.
thank you....thank you very much.

Hello Bajista, How much u lookin to spend mate. If you want something to start off with but is still loud.. Try and get something with a 15 inch speaker if not at least 12. And get the basics like volume mid, treble, I wouldnt go for all the gimmiks on the amp like effects. U can always buy peddles for tha sort of stuff.. U just want a good work horse with anything from 60 to 200 watts, depending on how much power you need and what you can afford..
Why not go to a shop and try a few out, Hartke kickback combo's are good. Basically buy the most power you can afford, but not something too big, believe me i have a fairly big amp and its a nightmare to move around! You want something with great tone because at the end of the day thats all that matters.
Hope that helps. _________________ Jazz from the mind Funk from the fingers Soul from the soul |

what's up bubinga? the price? i don't know. i will save a up a bit more to get what i need. i don't want to buy something that's going to break sooner than later, know what i mean. i see these fender bass guitars for about $150 at guitar center. but are they really any good worth keeping. i thought i'd ask here while searching. i haven't visited all the music stores in town yet to see who has what. once i complete that, i'll buy one. we have alot of music stores in my city. |

I have always been of the opinion that Fender is Fender.
I have a $275 squire telecaster, and it plays beautifully!
For a beginning bass, I would suggest a yamaha or Ibanez. They have quite a good range under $1000, and when I say good, I mean you could go on stage with them and not be scoffed at by other bassists!
As for amps, I would suggest that while you are looking for the highest power output, try and stay with a brand name! Warranty is much easier to claim on a Fender than a Bheringer or Ashton (who?). At the end of the day, no-one is GIVING away good gear, so you get what you pay for.
On the same token, though... cheap doesn't mean bad; it just means unpredictable. You may get a good set up for $500 or so, and it could last you 10 years! The same set up, however, runs the risk of lasting three days beyond the warranty!
When you spend the money, you are assured of good soldering on the connections, well screwed in screws, accurately positioned dials, etc etc.
Let us know how you go!
Cheers. _________________ Alright!
