Hey everyone, just a quick FRETTING HAND question about slap. When thumbing the A string,am i right to be muting the E string at the same time,or should i not,,and just learn to be more accurate while thumbing the A string? Also in general do most of you keep the whole length of all fingers across the fret board most of the time...For example when hitting open A string i mute E, then pop a note or two on the G string, with the bass of my fingers( near palm side of knuckle) while keeping top of fingers on the other strings........Am i going in the right direction technically...Hope this makes sense.
Any help much appreciated.

| Prior player is correct, wedd hopper. Personally I mute the E string with my left hand. I am not really conscious of it but it is part of my technique. I use my variation of Larry Graham's called 'thumb and snap' It is really what works for U. |

It depends on how you hold your bass. Look at Mark King. There's no way in hell that the above technique would work for him and his hand position. However, I play in a similar position and in fact I mute the lower strings with the underside of my forearm for silence. If I'm trying to do a muted thump or thumb pluck, I can use the heal of my hand to dampen the strings, but it's kind an awkward technique and not something I'd normally use for more than a few bars.
For folks who play with the bass hanging low, the technique described in previous posts may work well.[/i] |

I mute pretty much with my fretting hand keeping my fingers fairly flat across all of the strings.
Also sometimes mute with thumb of fretting hand coming up over the neck to muting the lower strings. Or let finger tips rest on the next string down (if striking note on the "A", will damp the "E" with my finger tip(s)). Depends on what I'm doing.
I wear my basses about belt buckle height. _________________ Life is just a game and there's many ways to play and all you do is choose |
