I have been playing for six months now, and I am getting pretty good at playing, I am able to jam with my buddies who have been playing guitar for over 7 years, but the thing is, I have learned all the tablature and stuff, but what I dont know is the bass scales. What are they, are they important to know? How can I learn them?? And also, will they help me in figuring out bass lines for songs easier, because it seems like whatever my buddies throw out on the guitar, it is like a guessing game to find a bass line that sounds good. Will learning scales and whatnot help me with this??
Anyways thanks guys....Take her Sleazy

Hmmm...well... scales have their place, but it's mostly for playing those connecting notes when you move from chord to chord, or to know what notes are used over a chord.

I'd concentrate on learning the different chord notes in various patterns. Much more useful than scales at this point in your development.

Check out Carol Kaye's website for some excellent material that you can use from now on, no matter what style you play. http://www.carolkaye.com

In particular, her Bass Video and her 6 books on Elect Bass are fantastic. Tell her dave sent you.

i don't know scales. and i play pretty good.
i tought myself to play the bass. so i could jam with a freind on guitar. neither of us knew a thing about em' so i guess we tought each other. now he's playing some bluegrass stuff (greatful dead-widespread panic) on banjo, madalin, acustic. i stayed with bass.
(--where did that come from--)
back to topic. i don't know scales or where the chord C is on a bass..but when i hear the note C i just know where to put my finger.
as far as using fills when changing notes. i just kinda know. and if what i try the first time doesn't sound good. then i try somehting differant the next time. listen to every mi-nute sound of each chord. look at his fingers while he plays the chord. lets say he plays a G chord. look at his fingers, every string he hits while strumming, you can go find all those notes, and there's your run. just hit those notes and stay in time with the music.(not the best description-try hitting the octive's of those notes instead) i jam with a guy on acustic alot. his songs are good, lots of hammer ons, and pull-offs, but are a little dull with only the acustic, so i try pepping them up by adding in alot of fills. and when he goes hi, i go low and vice-versa..i also try using my octive notes to make it sound a little more interesting.
G--7-----7--|
D-------0---|
A-5---------|
E-----------|
Those are octive note's. every note has one. find them. octives' are also used alot on bass for slap pop...thumb down on the
A-STRING-5TH FRET and pinky (pop) up on the
G-STRING-7TH-FRET do it back and forth untill you build speed and get a good sound,
then start working your way up and down the neck...
G------7-7------------|<--PINKY POP)
D---------------------|
A-0\5-5---------------|<--HAMMER ON THUMB)
E---------------------

English is fun. Correct grammar is too. You should try it.

First, there really aren't special bass scales. If you learn scales, such as the major, minor, pentatonic, blues, etc., the same formula will exist for guitar, bass guitar, piano or whatever. What will change is that scales for bass guitar are written in bass clef in standard notation.

Should you learn at least the major and minor scales and the major and minor pentatonic and the blues scale? I think if you are serious about being a bass player, you should learn at least those scales to start. Plus, learn to play them in every key.

But, in addition to scales you should learn to arpeggiate chords. That would include for starters, major, minor, minor seven flat five and dominant seven and minor seven chords.

If this sounds confusing and sounds like a tremendous amount to master, buy a bass guitar instruction book that includes theory. If it is worth its salt, it will. And good luck to you as you develop your bass guitar skills.
