Hey all, First time here, First message ever posted.
I Just bought my Bass Yesterday and I think im in love, lol. By Tabs i have already figured out how to play the intro from Limbizkit's ' Rearranged' song. As well as a catcy Blues tune ( i dont know what it's called) , but that was by ear.
Anyway i was just asking for a link to an not to difficult, But good sounding song. You know one of those rythems everone knows, and is catchy etc. Just something fun to play to get used to the feel for the bass you know ? oh and i cant read music, ( yet ) So it'd have to be in Tab's.
Thanks in advance. |

| Sorry to double post but no one answered yet anyway, lol. I was wondering if it is important to do the Fingering for the notes a certain way, Or if it would be better to go with what feel comfortable for me... which is basically little things like i would rather use my Ring finger than my Little finger, and i would rather use my index finger when playing a three not rythem rather then my middle finger ... whish was the one i was showed to use.. Little things. |

I even found a link for a free mp3 download. A rather poor version of the song, but still. You should know this one.

If you're into rock stuff, I think Learn to Play Bass with Metallica and/or The Best of Nirvana (Bass) - A Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Bass Styles & Techniques of Chris Chris Novoselic might be useful. Both take it lesson by lesson so you can really understand what you're playing and see conections, not just rely on tab (which can become a bad habit BTW). Fun stuff, and worth the investment, in my opinion. (And yes, it has Tab, in case you were wondering...)
As far as Tabs go, you can find many songs on bassmasta.net and many catchy basslines on activebass.com _________________ Mind you, moose bites can be pretty nasty...

I ordered mine online... but any bookstore or music store should be able to put in an order for you...
Google them or look them up on Amazon... print out the ISBN, title, author, all that fun stuff... and see if they can help you out.
Oh, and as far as cool bass lines...

You asked whether there is a specific fingering or if you should do what feels comfortable...
I would vote first off... put your bass in a comforatble, reasonable position not too low or too high. Too low (i.e. around your knees like some heavy metal folks do) will make it hard for your left hand to fret properly, and it will encourage your left thumb to get into the action, which is bad. Too high (like some funk folks wear it) can cause carpal tunnel in your right hand. Basically wearing your bass in the right position makes fretting, and fretting "properly" much more comfortable.
As far as "how" to fret properly... I'm not quite sure how to explain it. You might have to google that one. _________________ Mind you, moose bites can be pretty nasty...

Hey guys, thanks for the huge feedback. I like The rythem's too there good. Took me a few tries to get the rythem down, but i have had my bass i think a little over a week now so im still proud haha.
Since were on the topic of sound, how does Distortion work for a bass? I have only heard one tune where it had a bass with distortion, but it was just a solo so i dont know how it fit into the rest of the band. I was wondering what the thoughts on distortion for bass are, If it sounds good, if it is used much by bands. Etc. |

The problem with distortion is that it adds a lot of higher frequency sounds that go all over the place but often does not retain the lower frequencies. The boominess of the bass disappears. And since the bass is supposed to play the low end in the band distortion does not work so well. Overdrive is light distortion that may work better. _________________ I've recently done tons of reflecting on my life and have come to the realization that my life is awesome |

Overdrive and distortion are in principle the same effect, but overdrive is not as hard and the sound will be more natural.
If you are going to get a pedal for overdrive or distortion I recommend getting one that is made specifically for the bass because it will be designed to let the low frequencies through. _________________ I've recently done tons of reflecting on my life and have come to the realization that my life is awesome |

So Overdrive comes In a pedal like distortion does huh? Cool. So ... Overdrive Gives the distortion effect to the existing tone's of the strings, rather than ghanging them to something higher for a distortion effect right? If thats the case... Then why would t you just get an Ovderdrive pedal instead of a Distortion one anyway ?
Okay well how much does one usually run for? I'm playing a Squire by Fender, So I'm guessing one for that bass. |
