I think you have to go to a music store and compare the sound of an overdrive pedal to a distortion pedal and listen if you can hear a difference. Remember to listen for the low frequencies because if they are lost the pedal is useless in a band situation IMO. Also, there is no specific boundary between overdrive and distortion and the sound that one pedal company calls distortion another company may call overdrive. Common budget brands are Boss, DOD and Digitech. I advice you to try pedals that specifically say "bass" on them. If you can find somebody in your area who sells a used pedal that will probably be the best deal. I don't know what these pedals cost in Canada but I am guessing 80 CAD.

*amazed at my own wealth of information*

Speaking of pedals...

I just saw the new line of Behringer pedals today. They're very cheap as far as (new) pedals go, about US $25 each. To some degree, of course, you will get what you pay for.

i dislike distorted bass, as it does seem to lose some of bassey sparkle that drew me to the instrument, but then again i was drawn to a kind of interested in a funk tone applied in metal, which is odd, and i dont know what got you into bass so i couldnt speak there!

i recently played my bass through a guitar 'heavey metal' distortion pedal and thought it sounded really cool until the other bassist in the band (yes we have two Razz ) and the guitarist started jamming, too. i then realised it juss ended up sounding like a really weird guitar playing the wrong part of the tune. suppose that was a guitar pedal though...

in the end it all boils down to what tone you want. and will you post the tab to mario bros, as it would be awesome to slip into during a jam and see if anyone realises....

I ended up getting an Overdrive pedal for about 30 bucks, with and adapter so i dont have to spend a small fortune on batteries. lol. I also agree it doesnt sound to good with a band, but it is fun for when your just sitting at home and you want to rock out by yourself for a bit Razz .

Im not sure about the whole song but the main riff everyone knows for The super mario borthers theme goes as:

--9-9-9---9-12---
--------10---------
----------------10-
-------------------

|-----------------------9-12-15-10-12-9----------| X2
-10-5---7-9-8-7-5------------------------10-12-9
-------7--------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------

It's not to hard, It got a little tricky for me on the G string there just cuz it kind of fast paced. But once i knew how to play it off by heart it wasnt an issue. lol. And the timing just goes as you think it should. If your not sure plug in the old nintendo and have er a listen. lol. I have only been playing about 2 weeks though so im sure you'll have no problem.

Some other things too, Just for a recap, I have learned to play other little songs, like the simpsons and the darth vader theme's. I can play about 89% of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. A friend of mine showed me some other songs, but frankly i was kind of intoxicated when he showed me so i dont remember what their called. lol. I'm playing bass for about 2 hours a day now minumum. And finding New tunes and whatnot.

Also, someone else said they had 2 Bass players in their band, Thinking about it I dont think I have ever known any other band to do that besides a school band or something. lol. How does that sound? do you play different things or the same thing? Take turns or what ? lol. And for anyone else why dont more bands have 2 bass players? I mean its not uncommon to have a 1st and 2nd guitarest but like i said, for bass i dont come across that too often.

No, it is very unusual. I have only seen one band with two bassists - The Dirtbombs. They have one singer/guitarrist, two bassists and two drummers (!). The bassists in that band occupy different sound spectra, one plays the really low notes and the other the notes between the low bassist and the guitarrist.

PS Consider making a new thread for each new topic

So how did playing the Super Mario Bros. theme go ? Anyone even notice ? Suprisingly enough, It's not as recognizable a tune as you might think. I was shoked myself I know, what kind of world are we living in these days ?

Well, I'm done with the easy songs. I'm now looking for an impressive song. Something challenging. Something that would sound like a good bass solo. Where you really show off so-to-speak. The kind of tune you play and people's jaw's drop. It will still have to be in tabulations though. Considering I'm attemting to go big here, The timing would be nice. As another poster had done with the " 1 2 3 + 4 + " Counting. I know I'm asking for a huge favour but I know if anywhere there's people nice enough to help it's here. Smile

I'm not going to start trying to play above my ability, I just want a good song that will be a huge project for me. Something I can work on for hours at a time. Whittle away and work on. I think it will help alot. To really push myself and rise to the challange.

By some off chance, I am going to be playing the position of bass player in a band in about a month or so. Any tips or such for playing in a band situation ? How to contribute as much as possible, Fit into a band sound?

Oh, one more thing. Thanks for putting up with my awful spelling, grammer and punctuation. I never noticed how bad it was. Lol. Looking foreward to hearing from you.

How about some U2 stuff? With or without you is pretty simple, but very satisfying. New years day bounces along quite nicely, and Angel of Harlem has a cracking groove as well!
