tab = tablature

Tab shows you the strings and what frets to play on the bass. It is a primitive form of music notation. In the long run you should learn to read music, but many bass players never do. It is more work initially but is very helpful in your musicianship.

First step is get a bass.
Second step is working out what style and sound you want to work on (blues, funk, jazz... everything).
Third step is to find a CD or song that you want to be able to play.
Fourth step is learning where the notes are on your bass (any beginners book will help you with this).
Fifth step is either buying the music book to the CD mentioned in step 3 and working it out, or sitting up all night and working the CD out by ear note for note (I have found that this is the funnest way to learn bass! Just working out a song I like by rewinding and playing it 1000000 times!)
Sixth step is to find other muso's. Play with them, talk with them, but most importantly... be honest! Don't start sprouting stories about the time when Metallica asked you to step in for them. You'll get support. Most muso's love sharing knowledge, technique, and time. It makes them feel as though the are giving something back! Rolling Eyes
