Go for a hunt in the technique forums. I know I have answered this same question about 4012 times.
You'll find all you need to know by having a read.

It is, Confused one. It is.
There is gold in these halls of bassdogs. One just has to keep there eyes open...

But seriously, the knowledge someone can pick up here just by reading all the posts that have gone before is worth a fortune if you were to pay for it in lessons. Makes me think that maybe I should donate to such a community that allows people the chance to learn some stuff about things!
(Just gotta wait until the credit card works again!)

Well, I'm new here, too, but I'm puzzled by this. I thought this was the technical forum (it is labeled bass guitar technique). Where else is this info found? All the other forums on this site are generally tied to different manufacturers.

Thanks for the guidance...

all i did was sit and watch the janet jackson velvet rope tour over and over...

just watch people play. i kinda wish i had watched victor wooten when i was starting though, i wouldnt be trying to change technique now.

thats all i have, just watch people play, its way easier than listening to what people have to say.

Hey you guys !!

I found this video on Google with some guy named Josh slapping. He is not so insanely fast, so you can actually see how he is doing it. Take a look!

Josh has good technique!
But I would add that the groove is the most important part of any bass playing. Does it make you foot tap?
I couldn't care less how fast someone is, as long as my foot taps and my head starts moving with the groove, then the bass player has done his job. And I don't just say that lightly. I can slap hemi-semi-demi quavers without raising a sweat, but would trade it all for being able to groove 100% of the time!
Find the groove, then worry about the fancy stuff!
