I've seen aftermarket brass nuts for sale for J Bass instead of regular "bone" (real or simulated). Anybody know about using a brass nut?

Never used them, but here is a excerpt from a web article I came across;

"The most common materials for guitar nuts include bone, brass, graphite, plastic, Micarta®, Corian® and Tusq®. My personal preference is bone, although the occasional density inconsistencies of this natural material have prompted the use of several alternatives. Brass (which will tarnish, and very popular 20 years ago when everyone seemed to want heavy, sustaining solidbodies) and graphite share the trait of being self-lubricating. The string vibrations generate a little bit of fine dust that helps the string slip easily. This also, however, leads them to wear out a bit faster than some materials."

Hope it helps.

i usually replace bone or plastic nuts with brass (actually i have a tech good do it - me scardy cat). they last longer (natch) and the sustain is a lot better BUT a brass nut will wear out strings. to counter the string wear problem i take a soft pencil and get a lot of graphite in the grooves. has served me well indeedy
