Never used them, but here is a excerpt from a web article I came across;
"The most common materials for guitar nuts include bone, brass, graphite, plastic, Micarta®, Corian® and Tusq®. My personal preference is bone, although the occasional density inconsistencies of this natural material have prompted the use of several alternatives. Brass (which will tarnish, and very popular 20 years ago when everyone seemed to want heavy, sustaining solidbodies) and graphite share the trait of being self-lubricating. The string vibrations generate a little bit of fine dust that helps the string slip easily. This also, however, leads them to wear out a bit faster than some materials."
