Some of you may bang your heads with frustration at the severe ignorance of my question, but:

What is theory and how will it help me become a better bass player?

enlighten me

when i did it for piano and cello it was 5 different thin boring coloured (eg brown, grey etc.) for grades 1 -5 and then one of the biggest orange books you've ever seen for grades 1-8.

music theory is a great thing. it is what nusic is written in. whenever u read music...that is theory. scales are music theory, chords are theory...etc etc. i think u know what it is now, no? Well it helps u understand where music is coming from in a tonal sense. Just ask some of these more experienced guys like Neil_Grey or gibson-thunder, they wouldnt be where they are without theory....its also very excruciating to learn theory do to its boring nature. well, good luck!

Yeah, I'm kinda nerdy so theory has always fascinated me. Theory not only covers the scales and chords, but it also is the idea of suggesting where those chords and scales should go based on what's already been done in music. It is the idea of how tones move off of one another to the next tone in the next chord. I HIGHLY recommend theory to anyone wanting to be serious musician.

Theory is basically, the rules of music. As I'm sure some guuy said at some time, "you gotta know the rules before you can start breaking 'em"

That was my dad, saying (with his mouth full) "stop talking with your mouth full" to my brother.

That's what I loved about theory. "Here's the rules, learn them, memorize them....now, none of them apply."

First, Is that Marilyn Mansons eye in your sig. Musci theory basicly helps you stream line your natural music "feel" it also allows you to plan music before you have played it. Like is Know that a chord containing E/B/D will sound good but sad.

No, it is not the Marilyn Manson eye. Eek, not even close. It was a projected artwork for Rush's Vapor Trails album that they ended up not using, but I really liked it, so I use it for my avatar.

And yes, you're more or less right on the theory. Although, E/B/D will not always sound sad. It's amazing the textures you can get using chords in different manners and different rhythms.
