I'm a 40 y/o guy, someone gave me a bass and I'd like to learn how to play. I know how to read music, have played drums, trumpet, piano, blah blah blah....
I am looking for a decent amp to learn how to play. Musicians Friend has a Rogue 30W combo for $60 bucks:

Can I get by w/this? Or do you guys have other suggestions?

I think any amp that lets you hear yourself is good when you are talking low power. Make sure it has a headphone out so you can use it quietly when you have to. The thing is, a bass needs power to breath and I don't think they start to really sound good until you hit 100 watts. It isn't a volume thing, it's a presence thing. Any low watt amp will work but none of them sound really warm or bassy. I learned on a 15 watt Crate and moved on from there. Personally I think the Fender bassman 100 is the best sounding combo in it's price range (under $500). _________________ There are the black days of loathing and pain and then there are the bad days...

| Rouge is some pretty cheap chit, that said however, it should be fine. You don't want to spend a lot on a home practice amp. The amp doesn't need to be first rate construction because it never goes anywhere and 30 watts is more than plenty for noodling around the house. My personal favorite in a pint-sized practice amp is the Peavey Microbass, but they're a bit more money of course. |

| OK, my favorite is the Peavey Microbass. It is small but with a pretty big sound and has the basic features that you need. You can use earphones with it, which is a must. It does not have CD in for instance, but I find that too noisy to use anyway in amps that have it. I'd like to hear other peoples recommendations. |

I am just starting to play bass, had my first practice session a couple of weeks ago. My amp is some anonymous cheap thing, probably 60W but on full volume it was vibrating badly (my apologies, but it was making a sort of loud farting sound), I guess the cabinet or speaker is not up to it.
So thanks for this thread, I am looking for a 100w home/small session amp.
Any further ideas would be most welcome. |

word on the street says that the swr LA combos are first rate practice amps and not to bad on price either. my practice amp is a swr workingman's 10. it works great for small gigs and practice. it doesnt have cd in jacks, but it has an effects loop and that does the same thing. xlr direct out too so you can pipe in to the house pa if you need more.
i havent used it for practice much lately, ive been using my big rig for that...the people below me think its cool to be loud in the middle of the night when im trying to sleep _________________ "Excuse me Sir, but do you know how to get to Carnegie Hall?"
