I currently play a Gibson Thunderdbird IV but am looking to get
a cheaper, decent back-up bass (for on-stage string breakages/
diffferent tunings etc...).
I've got my eye on an EB3.
Any opinions for / against this particular bass?
Cheers

If you can possibly do it, get an original... the Elitist EB-3`s from what I hear are very nice & true to the original, but for its hefty price you could buy an original. the run of the mill Epi EB-3`s dont have the thunder that the originals did, not by a long shot. EB-3`s are awesome axes, definatly not for slappin` & poppin`, but for a fuzzed out thunder bass, it cant be beat. think Grand Funk, Mountain, Cream.... HEAVY is the word. I love the little monsters. just in case nobody here knew that already... I woulnt be suprised if when you play an EB-3, you end up putting the t-bird on a stand & making the EB-3 your main axe...it has much more personality... _________________ --==Warum tut es weh, wenn ich pinkele?==-- |

Tokai has quite a fair replica of these SG-style basses as well, I just found out. Gibby, have you ever played (or even heard) one of these? Or maybe someone else? Tokai has a good reputation for their replica's and the 7okais these days come from the exact same factory in Japan that produces the Japanese 7enders - this is what got me interested! I'm curious, y'all!

IIRC the Tokai is short scale and the Epi is long scale.
I used to own an Epi EB3. The main problems with the Epiphone are 1. bridge pickup is a bit *Poop*, gets drowned out by the sidewinder (even more so than on the Gibson), 2. most serious neck dive I've ever experienced on a bass. The build quality was also a bit dodgy on mine. That aside, it's not a bad bass for the money, if you want Gibson tone on the cheap. |

I had an Epi EB-3 and I agree about the neck dive, but I liked the bass.
The one to look at is the EPI Elite EB-3, which is short scale and supposed to be a good quality, made in Japan. Closest to the original Gibson EB-3. They are not cheap though and about $1200?
There is one on the bay now for $595, but the idiot removed the chicken head switch and replced it with a toggle! Maybe he still has the switch with choke? _________________ Barkless Dog |

thats horrible! unless he found a varitone toggle? the varitone wouldnt be too expensive to replace, however, maybe 100.00... how much time is left? _________________ --==Warum tut es weh, wenn ich pinkele?==-- |
