This is probably a really stupid question but, I was just wondering if only my E-string is dirty and my other strings are not, should I boil them all or does it matter Question Thanx for listening to this (dumb) question Laughing Wink

I remember asking a similar question when I first went to a gym (years ago!). I asked this Arnold Schwarznegger sized guy if I should lift heavier and more weights with my stronger arm just because I could. Three days later, after he stopped laughing, he told me that what you do to one side of your body, you have to do to the other. Otherwise you'll wind up looking real funny. He also went on to tell me that the human body is like a tree, but I slowly walked away from him at that point, careful not to make eye contact, or to move faster than 4 kilometres per hour.
Same with strings. I am reluctant to replace one string if it breaks... I tend to replace the set, so I would never just 'boil' one string... if I was to boil my strings at all.... which I never would.... yeah.... hmm.... that's right....

The theory is that boiling them releases the oil build up. I know people who would boil or 'simmer' their strings for up to 45 minutes, but at the end of the day, any oil and dirt is going to come out pretty fast, seeing as how the strings themselves can't absorb anything (it's just the gunk caught in between the winds).
10 minutes is plenty, but make sure you stir the pot occasionally. This gives each string the chance to get fully dunked.

Why not just put a fresh set of strings on?

Yep. This is my thinking, too. But boiling them does give them some extra life. I personally would never do it, but that's because I am making enough $$$ to keep my equipment tip-top.

You know I was thinking about strings and I realized, that on my basses, I don't really change the strings very often, not nearly as often as I change guitar strings on occasion I have left the same set of strings on my bass for over a year,as long as they still sounded good.

I'm the complete opposite. I change my bass strings every couple of months, but I have my semi-acoustic and my tele, and they have had the same strings for over a year! They still sound great, so...
I wonder if guitarists ever boil their strings?
What a pain in the butt!

Okay, because I'm a newb without s job, I got my guitar used from a pawn shop for my sixteenth birthday a few months ago. I have no idea when the strings were changd last, but they haven't broke yet, should I boil them or change them anyway?

a good rule is to change out your strings on a new purchase right away.
