I love my '79 4001, but in comparison to my other basses it has a very weak signal. I have to turn up my amp to compensate, but then (naturally) the noise level increases.
I've tried aftermarket humbucking pickups (had to make a custom pickguard and bridge pickup base to accomodate them) which boosted output somewhat, but the sound quality suffered, so I ended up reinstalling the originals for the sound.
Q: Can I boost the signal by bypassing capacitors?
Should I try newer 4003 pickups?

Eric
