Hey all, i recently decided to learn the seifnfeld theme (hehe so fun to play), but on one part, there is slapping on the 1st string, and i cant really get any sound off it. hmm its not like that kinda hard to explain, but when i slap the 4th, its very noticeable, but slapping the 1st doesnt give out as much sound and it doesnt seem to have the slap effect to it. Is there something wrong in my technique or is that just the way it is?

thanks

Phat

Hey,

Slapping on the 1st string is harder than the 4th, as the thick E gives a solid, phat sound when you thump it. The G is obviously much thinner, so banging it down into the fretboard in the same manner won't have the same impact, thus a much weaker sound.

Keep giving it a try, you should eventually get some sound out of it. Keep in mind your slaps will be much thinner on the G string. One thing you may want to try is playing those notes on the D string, if you can make the jump up the fretboard fast enough.

You may also be victim to the limitations of the construction of your bass - depending on how well your bass is made, this may add to the difficulty.

I don't do much slapping anymore, but when playing harmonics on the low frets (2nd-4th), I find my success varies from bass to bass - as much as the player's fingers/hands make the notes, we are all occasionally victim to the quality of our instruments and gear.
