i believe it was a hartke bass amp that had a metal looking speaker cone, or maybe it was plastic?
i plan to graduate from a practice amp to a big combo amp or maybe a rig. i like the idea of those cones, they seem indestructable towards playing your bass too loud and with low notes. my little practice amp has that typical black cardboard type speaker cone, and it's torn, but still works. i'd like something that avoids this, and also doesn't make the cone rattle and buzz too much.
any thoughts on these type of speaker cones would be appreciated and help my research in buying my first real amp.
thanks |

I believe the cone is aluminium, although if this helps the sound or not I don't know. I've played the B900 90watter, which had an ordinary cone, anf was quite nice, but when I went to buy it, it was gone. I ended up with a Laney R3 which is the dogs bits as far as I'm concerned, Brit built (hooray for us) 165watts, same price as Hartke. Reeesult!

Yeah, aluminum cones. Titantium on fancier woofers. Plastic on the cheapest woofers. The benifit to anything other than paper woofers is the fact that they are drink resistant: ever dump your soda on your amp, you might be able to recover from that oops. The paper ones ARE tough though, they offer less distortion than plastic ones, and they do last for 20 - 30 years assuming you don't punch a hole in them ^_^. The metal ones are very nice at warding off distortion, especially the 10 inchers, nice, quick bass.
Don't like your Laney, eh? I've never seen one and probably never will here in the US ^_^. |

My rythm guitarist uses a small Laney combo for practicing and it rocks! 12 built in effects including overdrive. Sounds wicked and I think he paid like £120 for it!! _________________ What kind of a world do we live in, when passing rufians can say 'NI' to old ladies? |
