| What are the advantages/disadvantages/attributes of both the Jazz bass and P-bass? |

Jazz:
*More versatility (two pickups)
*Slimmer neck
*More contoured
P:
*Thicker, heavier tone
*More traditional body
I could give you facts and figures all day, but the truth is.... you won't TRULY learn anything until you try out both for yourself. You have to hit the shops and investigate yourself. Play, play, play. Then you'll know what's best for you.
My choice is a P/J combination. It has the more attractive P body and the slimmer J neck. It also has both P and J pups. It's pretty much best of both worlds. |

I agree Jazz bass does have more freedom tonewise, and I use my fender jazz fretlass for A lot of things but I particulerly like p=bass better.
Hey! I'm only 14 but I'm a state level playa and I'm as serious about playing as everyone else in here so don't blow me off!!!
Peace! |

Hi!
I have a Fender Jazz and a Fender P bass. Love 'em both.
My fav is the jazz bass. I love the body, and slimmer neck. I replaced the neck pickup with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. WOW!!
I think a jazz bass with the P/J pickup configuration is the way to go. It gives the best of both worlds.

Yes, or a Jazz with an S-1 switch. Like them both! |

i bought a used p-bass way back when and immediately cusomized it adding the two straight jazz pu's as well as the split p pu -- all SD 1/4 pounders. sweet! also three concenntric volume inside/tone outside knobs + off/on switch. neck is a little fat, but comfortable and p's don't seem to weigh as much as j's.also installed badass II bridge and brass nut. _________________ Life is just a game and there's many ways to play and all you do is choose |

I played both and I prefer JB. Why? Maybe because I play jazz often . I think it depends on taste and kind of music you play. For fusion, jazz and similar climats JB is the best bass I've ever heard and played. _________________ I play bass everywhere! |

Don't think you can go wrong with a good PB or a JB, provided you get a good one. Like lots of bassists I have one of each - a 1976 PB and a new Custom Shop JB. The former was my first decent bass, and besides its sentimental value is a great instrument, but I've been blown away by the tone, playability and sheer quality of the latter.
Basically, as has been said, if you like a slimmer neck and a sharper tone, go for a JB - but you need both! _________________ “I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played” – Arvo Part |

Precision Bass, basically a type of Fender with split coil pick ups i.e.
The other main Fender is the Jazz bass, with different style of pick up, means it produces a different sound like so
