There really aren't that many differences.... outside of quality. American basses are always top-notch and it shows when you look at the price tag. Mexican basses are very very good for the money, but may have a couple minor flaws. There might be some slopiness in the cavity or the bass might need a set-up after you buy it...... nothing huge, though. In my mind, the MIM Fenders are underrated instruments and a great value for the money. They may not be absolutely perfect but they're definitely great basses and you can't beat them for the price.

I think I'm leaning more towards the 60's reissue. The Geddy Lee was nice, but it already has another player's history attached to it. I'd rather carve my own niche. I just have to pay a visit to the dealer and test drive it. Hopefully I'll be super-satisfied.

Yeah, the way I figure it, every country is going to have various standards of workmanship, sure. But, that doesn't mean all of the products coming out of Mexico are crap. The "classic" series Mexi's seem better than the "standard" series. Do you guys think that's because Fender is trying to go for the vintage vibe, therefore spending more attention a 60's reissue, for example, than the standard one that is produced one after the other for years?

My personal opinion is that the 50's and 60's reissues are Fender's way of tapping into the nostalgia. Purely marketing. If they were so great, why all the subltle changes over the decades?

I have played them both and now own an MIA Jazz.
The necks on the MIA have rolled edges that are very nice to play. After using this neck the standard fretboard felt like it was biting into my hand at the edges.
The bridge on the MIM is not as heavy duty as the MIA but substantial enough and gets the job done.
I did not notice the tuners.
Looks wise they both looked good
I think the MIMs are decent quality and definately less expensive. A better bang for the buck.
If you leave money out of the equation the MIA's are nice. |
