Here's my tip (worked for me and I used to play speed metal).

1. Buy Powerslave from Iron Maiden.

2. Practice everyday until you can play the album front to back (correctly).

When you pull this off, your picking hand will be right up there with the best of 'em.

well done buddy, maybe u should spend more time practicing proper bass playing than posting stupid suggestions on here and then getting offended when other people correct u.

We got a live one here...
I don't remember getting offended, and I don't remembere asking you a God *Holy Censor, Batman* thing. What you don't know about me is enough to console me, and what I don't know about you is of equal consequence. Lets not get personal, as I am here to discuss bass. If you don't like what I say, then that is your problem and your problem only. Sorry you feel so personally offended by my suggestion, but that is all it was... A SUGGESTION! If you calmed down a little, you would realise that 'finger picking' is very different to using a pick, and quite a bit quicker than finger style. I'm not going to call you any names, because I feel that I am more intellegent than that... and for the record, I am not offended by you or your comment or the fact that you diagree with me. Welcome to the free world, where we have the right to disagree, but still get along Razz

whoever said that above is pretty braindead, first of all the guy asked how to play really fast fingerstyle. u suggested growing his nail and using it like a pick. first of all using ur fingernail isnt proper fingerstyle, second of all the guy obviously wanted to play fingerstyle for the tone it gives, yet u said that playing with a fingernail gives a pick sound. and thirdly, why would u bother playing with ur fingernail and growing it etc when a pick would do the same job. well done buddy, maybe u should spend more time practicing proper bass playing than posting stupid suggestions on here and then getting offended when other people correct u.

In the 80's I decided to go pick-less and wanted more speed and accuracy from my picking hand. After experimenting a while I found that I could play 16th notes on 1 string faster and longer by using 3 fingers in an alternating pattern: middle-index-ring-index-middle....... it is amazing how much faster and smoother I can play this way than any other way I have ever tried!
If you have questions on other ways to use this method just email me and I will be glad to help. Wink
I only use a pick now if the song begs for it, not because I have too!
Very Happy

ring, mid, ind is much easier i thik. Abraham laboriel does the crazy 5 finger technique which is thumb, pinky, ring, mid and index. crazy *Poop* if u can do it right. making your fore arm stronger with those 'V' shaped hand pump things helps alot coz there are no muscles in yur fingers only tendons which are hooked on 2 the muscles in yur fore arm. (i think thats correct shame on me if it isnt)

to those of u who read my message, i apologise if u thought i was flaming someone and i am a very layed back poster. what u read was me retorting to a post made flaming me. all i was trying to do was enlighten one of the bassists on the true question because from what i read they had misinterpreted it. im all for straying off topic but when im shot down for simply trying to assist a fellow member in interpreting a question properly i dont appreciate being told to calm down of ease up.

Spend the next few months playing as near to the bridge as possible. I joined a fast death metal band a few years ago and wanted to play fingerstyle only. When I started, I was sloppy and got really frustrated that my sound just didn't have the attack, speed and precision. Anyway, as an experiment, I started playing really near the bridge. The result was that I got massive blisters on my three fingers, which became huge callouses and my finger strength increased tenfold.

So, to quote an oft overused saying - no pain, no gain.

As soon as you incorporate a third finger, you greatly increase your repertoire of useable playing techniques. Triplets, flamenco strums (rasquado ?!?!), fast string crossing, effortless and fast sixteenths...

Anyway, I've always thought the main reason that metal players wanted to play with a pick was to make them look like better bass players Razz

Good luck

Bassmaster,
The point to which you elude to happened in November last year. I certainly meant no offence in my retort, as I'm sure at the time you didn't either. It seems to me that you have, for whatever reason, resurected an old thread, which from my observation, was quite valid at the time.
If you didn't mean to offend, then try and not use words like braindead. It really makes one think that you are going out of your way to start something.
As it is, I refuse to get angry with my computer screen, so I have not taken offence to anything written. I am just at a loss as to why you took offence to anything I wrote.

The best way two learn how to fingerpick fast may sound kinda weird but it works extreamly well, play REAL slow on high gauge strings make shure you pluck the strings very lightly and have consitant volume. Once you played real slow for a while paying atention to every detail of your playing speed up you'll be surprised to see that you can play much faster, try the above mentioned with tree fingers and sool you'll be figerpiking with your third finger perfectly

P.S. is there any way to keep your status the same and stop at a certain level (I wanna become and stay a big guppy which has for a long time -before i've even seen this site- my sn)
