i use both, pick, and finger styles. when using a pick though i prefer to use just a standard med guitar pick. but i don't play alot with a pick, mosty finger style [index/ mid/ ring] and can get pretty fast. it just take a while to get there. pratice makes perfect |

I have sent many hours practicing with my fingers but i can still go for long and fast with a pick, but you dont need to go that fast. I have got the speed but it has taken my 5 months 3+ hours a day. just use a pick it eayer _________________ See My Website: Click Here

Fair call... but one day, you'll be stuck without a plectrum, and you'll HAVE to use your fingers... you don't want them to be as smooth as a baby's bottom on that day. _________________ Alright!

| lol, pick is a good solution, like, go get some heavy guage strings, like ernie power slinks and then some heavy guage fender picks. trust me, then crank your bass and treble, roll back the mids and turn your bass's tone nub and your METALED OUT!~!! |

| Practice! Getting fast takes practice but once you do the ladies will love you. I learned to play extremeley fast buy shadowing fast *Horse's Patoot* bass players. Cliff burton, Rex bRown, and one way to get fast is to play NOFX without a pick. Learn these 3 bassists way of playing fast and you can get it. |

A lot of metal players use picks. I would rather see someone use their fingers instead of resorting to such desperate measures
If you 'pluck' the strings, then it's just a matter of practice (as it would be any other style. I don't think you need to use more than two fingers. I don't, and I can put down hemi-semi quavers without missing a beat. I'm sure over time, you could get to a stage where hemi-semi-demi quavers are just a warmup! |
Please explain to me what a "hemi-semi-demi quaver" is. |

Check that out.
Welcome to bassdogs, by the way! |
Thank you.
I've been a member of ActiveBass for around a year now, and I was searching in DrumDogs for something, and I discovered there was a BassDogs. |

A friend of mine showed me a good technique that worked well. You hit the strings downward as well as up with two or three firngers at the tips.
It takes some practice, hit down with finger one, then two, then hit up with finger one and then two. Kinda' like flutter kicking. Give it a try. |

Use four fingers I do, well when I do I am not very fast HA HA HA
Seriously get Billy Sheehans Video with him on the front with a doube neck bass. He shows a secret that I have been using for years and it seems to help he shows you to play from the first nuckle , not teh fist knuckle (did that make sense it is hard to explain).
When you look at your back of your hand with yo fingers out and speread. Your finger nail joint we will call joint 1
not that joint, bend your finger slightly and yo make a little bridge, we will call that joint number 2, THAT IS THE JOINT. the bend right there gives yo a short swing radius with your fingers. You can practice with this part of your hand and get amazing speed with three fingers.
Take your hand and put it palm up. Practice bending one finger at a time you will have to isolate the non swinging fingers for a while, but once you get it is cool.
I know I am explaining this in a weird fashion, get the Billy Sheehan tape it is on Cherry LAne. I hope this helps |

Yep... I get what you're saying. That would take some serious practice alright! _________________ Alright!

Just keep practicing on getting up to speed and work on getting a good clear note and you wont have any trouble playing fast because thats what I did and now I can play fast _________________

I'm an exlusively fingerstyle player, try to avoid picks unless its a cover tune where you really need the pick sound. I don't pretend to be able to play super fast but i can hammer it fairly well when necessary and the only advice i'd give is practice and persistance coupled with working up your ring finger as well as middle and index then alternating index middle index ring index middle index ring..... etc. _________________ HEADS! |

A lot of metal players use picks. I would rather see someone use their fingers instead of resorting to such desperate measures
whoever said that above is pretty braindead, first of all the guy asked how to play really fast fingerstyle. u suggested growing his nail and using it like a pick. first of all using ur fingernail isnt proper fingerstyle, second of all the guy obviously wanted to play fingerstyle for the tone it gives, yet u said that playing with a fingernail gives a pick sound. and thirdly, why would u bother playing with ur fingernail and growing it etc when a pick would do the same job. well done buddy, maybe u should spend more time practicing proper bass playing than posting stupid suggestions on here and then getting offended when other people correct u. _________________ rock on! |
