Hammer-ons are when you go from one note to another, both on the same string, without taking your fingers off one of the frets. h is the symbol for hammer-on, so 5h6 on the E string would be playing the 5th fret then without stopping the sound, put another finger on the 6th fret. They're a little bit complicated to explain via internet, but do you get it? _________________ Hey. |

| Yups, half the tricks you can figure out on your own as a beginner, you just learn the official names for them later ^_^. |

I agree. I went for a scholarship to get into the Institute of Music, and I was packing my pants because I knew I could play, but I didn't know if I could play what they wanted me to.
I watched a guy who auditioned before me, and as they started calling out all these technical terms, I put my bass away!
But then I noticed that he was doing really basic stuff... and doing it quite badly! I got my note book out and started scribbling: arpegio - what you do when you get lost in a 12 bar blues riff... ostinato - baby elephant walk... chromatic scale - anything you like, as long as you start and end on the note the scale is in... etc.
The technical terms confuse the playing. I never get to the middle of a song and think, "gee, a sixteenth note or a dominant seventh followed by the relative minor would really set this refrain off nicely. Maybe then the guitarist will negotiate a nice mode followed by a chromatic seventh. _________________ Alright!
