Anyone tried the D'Addario SloWounds?
They'r fairly cheap, and I'm shopping around trying to find an alternative to EBs. Not that there's anything wrong with EBs I would just like to find something that has a little warmer tone and something that doesn't canker up like the EBs.... cankering could be caused by my rather sweaty hands. _________________ www.mountainfever.com

I haven't tried them, but everyone online seems to say the same thing: warm sounding. I guess nickel is the way to go ^_^.
As far as getting nasty, I don't think there is any hope unless you find a bass string that doesn't have grooves like roundwounds do... You could always do elixirs (~cough~, ripoff, ~cough~). |

nope not flatwounds, ive been down that toneless road before...
The Slow wounds are some new gimmick that d'addario is going with. They're roundwouds but they have a high carbon stainless steel core with a tempered nickle winding on the outside. Something about the stainless core is supposed to keep them streching almost completely so they stay in tune longer and it supposed to add bottom end while the nickle wrap makes them really bright at the same time. _________________ www.mountainfever.com

Argh!!!! It must be just me!
I have to say that I find D'adarrio strings to be quite lifeless and standard. They are a good strong string, and they are reliable, but as far as using them in any professional setting, I wouldn't put my amp through the rigmarole. I don't find D'adarrio's to be warm or bright or anything. They are the string you put on when you want to toughen up your fingers or really go to town with some heavy duty slap in rehearsals. _________________ Alright!

There are also half wounds and pressure wounds. The half wounds are pretty self explanitory - halfway between flat n round - but the pressure wounds are cool. They manage to reduce string noise in a flatwound way but don't lose the tone as a side effect. I'm guessing that Slo Wounds are a different company's version of the same thing as the pressureW manuf process involves winding the string slowly. _________________ Slap me silly! |

I went ahead a got a set of the slowWounds and the box explained the whole thing. Vigo is probably right, they called slowWounds because it takes more time to manufacture the strings. The core is left under the same amount of tension for the entire winding process. ie they're left on the same same machine and the tension is constant while the wrap speed varies for each layer.
It supposed to keep them from stretching as much the first week you have them on and they're supposed to last longer.
They didn't stretch much at all the first few days like the last few sets of EBs I had and as far as tone they about the same maybe a little warmer and a little less bright... but we'll see how long they survive my sweating hands _________________ www.mountainfever.com
