Beo, steve harris`s bass hardly sounded "deep, dark, groovy, sexy, smooth and punchy" ... punchy, maybe... I dunno, Beo, Bassman was just suggesting that he check something out that he would dig based on his comments & descriptions. not trying to bring him to the dark side or anything... why worry about it? _________________ --==Warum tut es weh, wenn ich pinkele?==-- |

| *shrugs* Alright, if you say so. But I still think anyone should give new pickups a shot before they buy an entirely new axe. It's really amazing how much they can alter your sound. |

Might as well save the money and invest in a new bass than he has 2 different basses that can do 2 different jobs and he will have a back up bass as well. _________________ Sometimes we ride on your horses

| Yeah, go ahead and laugh. Nothing's funnier than people with opinions engaging in legitimate conversation. Why don't you contribute? |

Well, if you are interested in learning more about pickups, you should check out the FAQ page on the Duncan website... or possibly the DiMarzio FAQ would help.
Or if you have specific questions, I might be able to answer them. I know some things about pickups. |

Say,
What kind of pickups would I get to get a Flea-like tone? |

| He plays Modulus basses with active electronics. Actives or perhaps a J pickup in the bridge position would work well. Most of his tone comes from his fingers.... he's really big on popping and slapping. If you can sound like Flea with ANY pickup, I'd like to shake your hand. |

| lol, to end this long thread i have one word to define changing pickups for the most part. *Holy Cow Pud, Batman*. for the most part in my opinion, i think that you really just need a nice EQ on your amp. if your looking for a house shaking deep tone, use a combo with a decent preamp and a 15 inch speaker. i mean, i can go from rock (rumbling clarity for the most part) to rap (thick, juicy) just with the tools on my bass, which ARE p/j pickups. if your looking for deepness in general, then just crank your bass and treble and don't leave much mid inside of it. it shakes things for me, then just screw around with your pickups to find what you want. |

| I was thinking I might change the P pickups with some seymour duncan 1/4's like I think someone suggested. I do like Harris's tone. |

| either way it's cool, i'm just saying that you RARELY see a bassist that doesn't have a giant rack of tools to shake his sound, and it's probably because the pickups just provide a signal. lol, but than again with enouhg wattage and a steady paycheck you can afford that, so spend whatever it is on pickups, they're probably cheaper |
