New guy here, mind if I hang out awhile? Background-- 40-something bassist in a local roadhouse-rock cover band in upstate SC. I've played bass off and on for 25+ years, no flash and trash, just lay down the bottom. My main axe was a Leo-era Stingray until recently; I started getting nervous about taking it into some of the dives we play, so I picked up a used Yamaha RBX 755A 5-string off ebay for a couple hundred bucks (real happy with it so far, though I've never played 5's before, so that's taking a little getting used to). My rig is a Hartke 4000 racked with a dbx163 compressor; cabs are a Genz-Benz 210H and a small thiele cube loaded with an Emi KappaPro 15. My smaller rig (I do the occasional theatre gig) is an old refurbed B25B head and SVT-410E cabinet.
Band website is http://www.thecopperheads.net if you're interested. Look forward to checking in here on occasion.
Cheers,
John

Oooo goodie, some-one about me own age... almost...
Good to see you Hackster...
Sounds like you have some nice gear there.
Really glad to see you, I've only been looking here for a week or two, but was beginning to think bass players were too busy or into another longer established forum somewhere?
Meself are a long lost? returning bassist who learned backwards first time (I'm a leftie)
{I was initially forced to learn guitar RH!} And have been into the web for a few years
(that's why/how I found this) but was getting sick of that, and decided to see if my fantasies of being able to play natural handed actually had any substance.
To my amazement and "extreme" pleasure, I am finding that everything I learned 20-30 years ago is still there, and most of what I learned, transferred straight over, almost as if thats how it had been from the start!
I'm tryin' not to think of missed years and all that stuff when I was still close to the industry and enjoy the time now for what it is.
I feel like a kid with new toy!
However, ominously for groups like this, I am starting to see why it may be hard to hold members and people beyond newbies.
Sooner or later I reckon a crunch time is gonna come between guitar-time and web-time.
And at this stage I can already say which is gonna lose if any...
So welcome aboard...
Maybe a couple of us oldies should hang around a while if the other members approve, but it will need to become a bit more active for me to put much more time into it.
I like these international forums, they offer a chance for like minded people to communicate.
I hope they can get the participation rate up a bit.

| Hello all, another new member here, but an old guy (53). Been at it for almost 30 years. I play a 65 Fender Jazz, through an old Ampeg B-15, or a SWR WorkingMan/Aguilar single 12, or an old Peavy TNT130 if I need volume. Site is http://saxxonwoods.com, and I'm seriously behind on gear knowledge. Speaker is out on the B-15, any suggestions for a replacement? Also, see my thread about my search for a fretless. If I can help anyone, please post or contact... |

Welcome to the forum. This place is slow, nice to see a new guy.I've been on bass about 4 years. Started on guitar about 20 years ago. That Stingray sounds nice. I recently sold a hacked-up Stingray for a Fender American Deluxe P. Somebody had but EMG P and J style pups in the Stingray. It was nice but I got rid of it for not being original. I have a '77 Gibson RD Standard too which is rare and sweet.

That's one of the best things about playing a musical instrument - you never stop learning.

pereek: Sure, I'll try to keep it short. Played a little guitar and piano as a kid, picked up a bass at 23 (1973), and fell in love.
Played blues and rock in Texas, moved to Denver in '76, played country rock, got the best gig in town in '78, appeared in Clint Eastwood's "Every Which Way But Loose", played local jingle sessions '78-'81, toured western US with Gary Morris, who signed with
Warner Bros, (They wouldn't sign the band). Opened for Glen Campbell, Johnny Paycheck, Don Williams, etc.
Played around Denver, retired in '83, just play for fun now, http://www.saxxonwoods.com.
It was a great ride, but best for young single guys...
Steve

Sheeesh---ROFLMAO! My professional music career ended before these pups were born! Guess I'm lucky to still be kickin' and pickin', ah well...glad to see the young-uns pickin' up the coolest instrument, the guaranteed girl magnet...my first wife said when everything was just right at the gig, she could feel it "right down there..."

We rule, indeed.
Just keeping plunking, pups, and you'll find out why bass players get the gals. We also have more power over the crowd than anyone else in the band. If you are on, you can watch your groove go right through people.
If you suck, they will sit still in the chairs, and dance very little. If you hear a band with a good bassist and a mediocre drummer, and a cruddy lead guitar, people will still dance, and groove in their seats. Cruddy bass, no grooving, little dancing, people leaving, even if the lead guitar is hot.
You are more important than you know, just don't confuse that power with the need to play notes in bunches. |
