ok no ones posted for a while so i'd set another thread up.
Wheres your band heading at the moment?
my band:
5 man old skool cover band (at the moment) we've had 4 gigs, the local crowd love us and we are going to be writing soon.
Right now you lot. anyone got a record deal or anything like that?
Oh and another question. If you do write your won stuff how powerfull/independant/complex are you bass lines? |

My Band - Fluepjac
Currently preparing to record our third independent release titled, "The Hard Way".
Doing fairly well: songs featured on various TV shows, featured on MuchMusic USA'a Tastemaker Program, Mp3 of the Month in the June 2001 issue of BASS Player, as well as a favoralbe review of our last record in the Oct. 2001 issue of BASS Player. For further details on this stuff visit www.flupejac.com.
We're looking at a strong possibility of playing with J. Mascis at The Roxy in L.A. in Oct. Either him or The Dilinger Escape Plan and Mars Volta (same month).
We do write all our own stuff, and I feel pretty good about my bass parts. Within the context of a band not unlike Husker Du or Sugar, one has to be creative at times to keep the bass lines interesting and properly supportive at the same time. I would suggest checking out the site and visiting some of the links to get an earful.
Cheers.

Im in Groove metal band heavily influenced by Rush and Pantera. Guiatrist is very Intricate. I lay down a solid groove but i do my own thing like Geddy Lee. Very into slapping and very intricate bass lines as well. No recordings yet. Our name is Underlying Truth. All original songs and we are starting to play the Denver scene. People say they dig us a lot but say we have very original sound so you can't relate to it immediatly. I'll keep posting and when we have a recording which should be in about a month or so I will get back.

I've been in this for a long long time. I tell you, I'm not so sure that being "signed" means a whole lot anymore. The best thing you can do for your band is to work from the ground up, build your own following and put out your own records. Maybe something good will come out of it. Most labels only break about 3% of the bands they sign, that leaves alot of "signed" acts left to tour with little or no support from the label and eventually die. Or you get these acts like Marvelous 3 (Electra Records) who have a huge radio hit (Freak of the Week) and just when the ball is rolling Electra drops the ball and the band loses all it's momentum, and yada yada yada - It's over.
This is one of the toughest businesses in the world to really "make it" in. I guess it really depends on your idea of success too. I've played all over the United States in the club circuit and barely made a dime doing it - because the money always goes back into the band to keep things moving - but it's been a blast, still is a blast, and that's more than I would have ever thought I would do already.
But on the other hand, you could get signed to a good deal, get alot of support and blow up like the next big thing and make a ton of money and travel the world just rocking. I just don't think you should bank on it necessarily, just try to be as great a band and musician and businessman as you can.
Build it.
Anyway, enough ranting, good luck to all.
